Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy - Sound Effects Demo by TSDeYoung
Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a class project in which we took scripts based on the original BBC radio shows, and made a sound design for them and put them to the acting of a group of nine actors. This play was a very sound-centric production, our professors gave us free reign and encouraged us to use it. I did the sound design for one of the plays, and was also one of four system engineers.
Sound Design:
The sound design for this production was very fun to do. I love British comedy, and this is a perfect example of it. I thoroughly enjoyed interweaving subtle humor into my sound design, and at the same time accentuating the humor in the script. It was extremely fulfilling to create all the sound effects and environments which went into putting on a production like this, and then implementing them in QLab, a sound cue firing program. Here are some examples of sound effects and ambiences which I created for this show:
System Engineer:
As one of four system engineers for this show, my responsibilities included designing the electrical systems involved in the production, designing the speaker system involved in the show, and maintaining both. The electronic systems included systems for mixing the show, recording the show, and running sound cues for the show, and the interlinking between them. The loudspeaker system consisted of a 26 speaker sound plot, including ten small spot effect speakers of my design on the ceiling and a high and low surround systems, and five subwoofers. It was a great experience designing this system and using tools to implement it, including Simnet, a digital routing technology. Here are some system plots:
